Daily Dirt for Nov. 4, 2021

Yes, it’s the holiday season, but maybe not the holidays that immediately come to your mind. Find out a little more about we’ll be celebrating in November outside of Thanksgiving in Vol. 117 of the Daily Dirt. Welcome to today’s three thoughts.

1. I’ll be honest. I never realized what great holidays were in November.

Sure, I was aware of Thanksgiving and the last Saturday of the month always providing us the Ohio State vs. Michigan football game, but were you aware that we can actually celebrate the following holidays?

Nov. 4: “National Candy Day” should serve as the official kickoff to the holiday season. I think my favorite candy at the moment are those all-peanut butter Reese’s Cups.

Nov. 5: “National Doughnut Appreciation Day” might be the greatest celebration other than Christmas. I mean, who doesn’t appreciate doughnuts?

Nov. 6: “National Nachos Day” falls on a Saturday, and what better way to watch college football than with a big (and I mean b-i-g) plate of nachos and a cold beverage?

Nov. 19: “National Monopoly Day” is on a Friday. What better way to spend a Friday evening than with a six-hour edition of the world’s greatest game (next to Strat-O-Matic baseball, of course)?

Nov. 25: “National Parfait Day” falls this year on Thanksgiving, which can only be considered a bonus. I don’t care for pumpkin pie anyway, so being on the parfaits.

Nov. 29: “National Lemon Meringue Pie Day” strategically comes a few days after Thanksgiving, meaning we’ve all recovered from the turkey and mashed potatoes and are ready to sit back, grab a fork and devour this wonderful delicacy.

2. It’s that time. Hunker down for another edition of “Found on Facebook,” which always make me ask myself, “Do they really let these people out at night?”

  • “The shovel was a groundbreaking invention.”
  • “How much does it cost pirates to get their ears pierced? About a buccaneer.”
  • “Did you know God’s name is Andy? Remember the hymn, ‘Andy walks with me, Andy he talks with me.”
  • “I heard today on the news that President Biden is abroad. I said, ‘That’s not true, he’s a guy!'”
  • “Tonight we’re having Himalayan rabbit stew for dinner. We found himalayan in the road.”

3. This week’s selected birthdays to celebrate:

Demi Moore: The actress will be 59 on Nov. 11. Any argument that the finest moment of her career was her performance in “Ghost”? (PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Steve obviously missed her Oscar-worthy work in the 1996 classic “Striptease”. She was incredible in that. No sarcasm. Her and the late, great Burt Reynolds? C’mon…JRG)

Making pottery fun again: Demi Moore and the late Patrick Swayze in Ghost (1990) Paramount.

Leonardo DiCaprio: The actor also has a birthday on Nov. 11. For him, it’s No. 47. He’ll be forever linked to “Titanic”.

Neil Young: The singer will be 76 on Nov. 12. I’ve been to Hollywood, I’ve been to Redwood, I’ve crossed the ocean for a heart of gold …

And in the gone but never forgotten category:

Bram Stoker: The novelist who wrote “Dracula” was born Nov. 8, 1847, which means if he were alive today he would be 174 years old.

Billy Graham: Born on Nov. 7, 1918, Graham was 99 when he died in February 2018

McLean Stevenson: One of the stars of the highly acclaimed “M*A*S*H” television series, was born Nov. 14, 1929. He was 68 when he died in 1996.

Steve Fact O’ The Day
Steve has never eaten rabbit stew.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. He needs his own national appreciation day.
