DAILY DIRT: No Field of Dreams game in 2023? Booooo!!!

In just two years, the Field of Dreams games had grown into a major hit for MLB, and now comes word there will be no such game next year … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 368 of The Daily Dirt.

1. Well, this is a bummer.

Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register newspaper reports that MLB will not be returning to Dyersville, Iowa in 2023 to play the highly popular Field of Dreams game.

Birch wrote that MLB Hall of Famer Frank Thomas is one of the partners who bought the site over a year ago. Due to massive construction of the area, MLB won’t be back in 2023. Thomas and his partners’ plan includes a youth baseball and softball complex and a hotel. The youth complex is set to break ground later this year so that’s, largely, what is preventing baseball from returning in 2023.

There is hope, however, that MLB could return to Dyersville in 2024 and beyond. But there are currently no guarantees.

2. Here are three TV series I wish would be brought back to life for one final season, if for no other reason simply so we could feel like we’ve bid a proper good-bye.

Tie up the loose ends, answer all the questions. I think we’d all sleep a little better:

“Alf” (NBC, 1986-90): When the series was unexpectedly canceled, we were left with our hands in the air. What happened to the furry little alien and all of those principal characters that made up the cast of the show? In many respects, the humor and concept tied to this show was well ahead of its time. Would a wrap-up season actually lead to … “Alf II”?

“House of Cards” (Netflix, 2013-18): For most of its run, the popular political drama was incredible TV. It had to exit sooner than expected due to all the controversy surrounding leading man Kevin Spacey. There was simply so much going on in this masterpiece, one last season could answer many of those fringe questions that were not dealt with before the plug was pulled.

“Seinfeld” (NBC, 1983-92): What actually happened to Jerry, Elaine, Kramer and George, plus some of the key supporting characters? The series’ finale was so disappointing, and it left a bad taste in the moths of millions. Give us a season, or at least a mini-series, and provide the answers.

3. “Fast Times At Ridgemont High” is 40 years old this weekend.

Where the heck have all the years gone? Here are my three favorite characters from the iconic film:

Gold medal: Jeff Spicoli, portrayed by Sean Penn. Without Spicoli, there would not have been a fast time at Ridgemont High.

Silver medal: Brad Hamilton, played by Judge Reinhold, who went to fame as The Close Talker on “Seinfeld”.

Bronze medal: Ray Walston, who was “Mr. Hand” in the film. Before that famous role, he was best known as “My Favorite Martian” in the days of black-and-white TV in mid-1960s.

Steve Thought O’ The Day — Has there ever been a funnier movie character than Jeff Spicoli? Dude!
