Daily Dirt for Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024

The Elvis rendition will always be No. 1 … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,060 of The Daily Dirt

1. Today we wrap up our top 20 romantic songs for those who are young and in love, or possibly those who have been in love forever. These are the songs you can play at any time on on any day, look at your partner and know that he or she is THE one.

Click here if you missed songs 11-20 on the list.

Start the music …

  • 10. “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You,” by UB 40: Yep, as you will soon notice, this same song will appear later in the countdown. It’s not an error or oversight. This song is just that good.
  • 9. “Love Takes Time,” by Mariah Carey: “Losing my mind, from this hollow in my heart … “
  • 8. “A Summer Song,” by Chad and Jeremy: Arguably, the best of the summer love songs. It’s also a song that is timeless, sounding perfect in whatever era it might represent.
  • 7. “Love Is Blue,” by Paul Mauriat: The only instrumental on the countdown, but there are times the language of love needs no words.
  • 6. “Again,” by Janet Jackson: My favorite song from anyone ever carrying the last name of Jackson. And one of the greatest videos ever.
  • 5. “Back for Good,” by Take That: Here’s another group I thought was headed for major marquees around the world. But after this song, pffft!
  • 4. “I Cross My Heart,” by George Strait: If you don’t feel good after hearing this George Strait classic, I would suggest checking your pulse.
  • 3. “From This Moment,” by Shania Twain: The best-ever effort from a country artist (sorry, George!) in this category, accented by a great video.
  • 2. “Love Is All Around,” by Wet Wet Wet: “It’s written on the wind, it’s everywhere I go … “
  • 1. “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” by Elvis Presley: There are love songs, and then there is THIS love song. After hearing The King’s version, all other love songs are simply vying for the silver medal.

2. Did you know (Part 123)

  • Charlton Heston’s role in “Ben Hur” was originally offered to Leslie Nielsen. What?!?
  • It’s 46 days until Halloween, 74 days until Thanksgiving and 101 days until Christmas. Your friends at The Daily Dirt will continue to keep you updated.
  • Iin the divisional era (since 1969) in MLB, the all-time career triples leaders are Willie Wilson (147), George Brett (137), Brett Butler (131) and Jose Reyes (131). The overall career leaders are Sam Crawford (309), Ty Cobb (295) and Honus Wagner (252).
  • The best strikeout to home run ratio (1.02) in MLB history belongs to Joe Dimaggio. The rest of the top five are Yogi Berra (1.16), Ted Kluszewski (1.31), Ted Williams (1.36) and Bill Dickey (1.43). For all Cardinals fans, Stan Musial (1.47) is seventh.
  • Chuck Norris is the only man to ever blow a bubble while chewing beef jerky.

3. For all the long-suffering Chicago White Sox fans, consider this rubbing salt in the wound. Did you realize the worst team in MLB:

  • Entered the weekend having lost 20 consecutive series.
  • Has been SWEPT in 23 series.
  • Had lost its last 15 home games.

Steve Thought O’ The Day
Of all the artists mentioned in our love countdown this weekend, the one I regret most not seeing live in concert is Shania Twain.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. Obviously, Steve must have injured himself over the weekend to fail to put “At Last” by Etta James, “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers and “I Will Always Love You” by either Dolly Parton or Whitney Houston on this list. (Not even the top 20, Steve?) Hopefully, he’s recovering at home in the mancave with an ice bag on his head and ice in his Coke.
