Daily Dirt: Pigs may stink, but at least they don’t sweat
Daily Dirt for Sept. 9, 2021
Look at today’s Daily Dirt as a learning experience, particularly thought No. 1. This, my friends, is Vol. 62.
1. File these under strange, but true:
A. Pigs don’t sweat (but they still stink). Pigs don’t have sweat glands. To keep cool they roll in the mud, which provides a covering to protect them from sun damage and insect bites.
B. Pandas basically only eat bamboo.
C. In ancient Greece and Rome, spider webs were used as bandages.
D. About 25 percent of all the bones in your body are found in your feet. There are 26 bones in each foot. That’s 52 bones in your feet. Your body has 206 bones.
2. Looks like the struggling Big 12 Conference will be asking Cincinnati, Brigham Young, Central Florida and Houston to join in an effort to soften the pending exit of Texas and Oklahoma. Those are all solid choices, but I think it’s merely postponing the inevitable. At some point the Big 12 is destined to be little more than a memory.
3. A few years ago, a University of Iceland survey found 62 percent of Icelanders believe in real-life elves. Hmmm … Well, OK, I believe the Cleveland Indians will win a World Series in my lifetime, but I actually might have a better chance of seeing one of those miniature Icelanders.
Steve Fact O’ the Day
The only time I ever flew in an air plane was the summer of 1969. There are no plans for any sort of second flight.
When Steve likes to keep cool, he stays in his home and rolls around in the air conditioning.
