Daily Dirt: Steve loves being a ‘Grandpa’, hates the Yankees
Daily Dirt for July 23, 2021 by Steve Eighinger
If you’re a grandparent, I hope you enjoy Vol. 15 of the Daily Dirt:
1. Anyone who is a grandparent understands how special they are, in one way or another. These three famous quotes emphasize that point:
“My grandkids believe I’m the oldest thing in the world. And after two or three hours with them, I believe it, too.” — screenwriter Gene Perret.
“Grandchildren fill a space in your heart that you never knew was empty.” – Unknown.
“Grandchildren complete life’s circle of love.” – Unknown.
2. To this day, my all-time favorite pro wrestler remains Bobo Brazil, who rose to prominence in the 1960s and was once looked at as the Jackie Robinson of the squared circle.
Pro wrestling writer Dan Power in 2011 credited Brazil for “opening the door to future generations of African-American wrestlers.” Brazil, whose real name was Houston Harris, was famous for his headbutt and piledriver moves. He was a seven-time WWWF United States Champion and had some memorable matches with legendary Bruno Sammartino. Bobo died 1998 at age 74.
3. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
It was the summer of 1961 when I really became hooked on baseball, the year the Yankees’ Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth’s home run record when he swatted 61. Another thing I learned that summer was to hate the New York Yankees, and in that regard, nothing has changed much in the last 60 years.
