DAILY DIRT: That, my friends, is a lot of saliva … and Hugh Jackman once turned down being James Bond
I have a friend who must have double that number of sweat glands in his feet … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 992 of The Daily Dirt.
1. In most cases, the human body is a complex and remarkable entity.
To prove that claim, here are some strange-but-true facts:
- 1. A person produces about 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime. The “Hawk Tuah Girl” … probably double that.
- 2. A foot has an average of 500,000 sweat glands. Obviously, some people have more.
- 3. The average person has 250 hairs per eyebrow.
- 4. The space between the eyebrows is called the glabella. Former Orioles catcher Andy Etchebarren did not have a glabella.
- 5. The sound your stomach makes when you are hungry is called “borborygmus”.
- 6. There are more than 100,000 hairs on the scalp — but not all scalps are created equal.
- 7. Picking your nose and eating the contents may boost your immune system.
- 8. The medical term for ear wax is “cerumen”.
- 9. The bumps on your tongue are not taste buds. They are papillae, or sense organs, resting atop the taste buds.
- 10. 12 percent of the population is left-handed.
- 11. An adult’s blood circulates about 12,000 miles a day.
- 12. About 10,000 pounds of food is processed by an average human in a lifetime. That number might be larger for some. A lot larger.
- 13. The average person walks about 100,000 miles in a lifetime. And some don’t.
- 14. The fear of vomiting is called emetophobia.
2. Did you know (Part 54)
- That rapper Nicki Minaj once served tables at Red Lobster.
- That Madonna once worked at Dunkin’ Donuts, back when she was known as Louise Veronica Ciccone.
- That John Travolta was offered the lead role in “Forrest Gump” prior to Tom Hanks.
- That Hugh Jackman was offered the role of James Bond before it went to Daniel Craig for “Casino Royale” … Jackman said he preferred to concentrate on the X-Men series.
- That famed director Steven Spielberg has two rather famous goddaughters: Gwyneth Paltrow and Drew Barrymore.
3. Worldatlas.com says the following small towns are the five “loveliest” to visit in Missouri this summer:
1. Hannibal: The town “is best known as the boyhood home of Mark Twain. It was also the inspiration for two of his most famous novels, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer“ and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” a fact that has cemented the town’s popularity with fans of literature and classic Americana. Must-dos during a summer visit include visiting the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum with its exhibits relating to the writer’s early life and inspirations, along with the Hannibal Riverfront with its scenic views of the Mississippi and fun Mark Twain Riverboat cruises”
2. Hermann: “Founded by German settlers in the 1830s, Hermann has a distinct European charm.”
3. Boonville: “Named after Daniel Boone’s sons who established cattle salt licks in the area.”
4. Ste. Genevieve: “A must-see for its early French colonial architecture.”
5. Excelsior Springs: “Gained fame in the late 19th century for the healing qualities of its mineral waters.”
Steve Thought O’ The Day — The Boston Celtics are expected to sign Jayson Tatum to a five-year, $314 million contract. For those mathematically challenged, that is $62.8 million a season. That is more than the entire TEAM PAYROLL for the Oakland A’s.
Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. It’s a wonder he hasn’t gone viral for something.
