DAILY DIRT: ‘The people who tolerate you on a daily basis are the real heroes’
Daily Dirt for Saturday, Jan. 6, 2023
The Beatles were all under 30 when they broke up, are we witnessing the beginning of the end of the Nick Saban Era at Alabama? — and so much more, just ahead … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 831 of The Daily Dirt.
1. Need a good comeback for some of your Smart-aleck friends?
Always remember, I’m here to help.
I think any of the following five will take care of any insult that comes your way:
- “You’re the reason God made the middle finger.”
- “The people who tolerate you on a daily basis are the real heroes.”
- “Stupidity is not a crime, so you are free to go.”
- “Everyone is allowed to act stupid once in awhile, but you really abuse the privilege.”
- “Remember when I asked for your opinion? Me neither.”
You’re welcome.
2. Some little-known facts that might come in handy when you need to win an argument:
- When the Beatles broke up in 1970, all four members were still in their 20s: John Lennon and Ringo Starr were both 29, while Paul McCartney and George Harrison were both 27.
- Remember Tom Jones’ hit “It’s Not Unusual?” Did you know Jimmy Page played guitar on that song? Yes, THAT Jimmy Page.
- David Bowie’s music teacher in elementary school was Owen Frampton, father of Peter Frampton.
- While a student at UCLA, future Doors lead singer Jim Morrison played Monopoly with fellow film studies classmate Francis Ford Coppola.
- The 1992 Lithuanian men’s Olympic basketball team was sponsored by The Grateful Dead.
3. Here’s our final college football rankings of the season:
- 1. Michigan (14-0): I’m looking for the Wolverines to obliterate Washington in what could be the dawning of a decade of dominance for the B1G.
- 2. Washington (14-0): When it comes to uniforms, however, the Huskies have it by a large margin over Michigan. I’ve never been a fan of those silly winged helmets the Wolverines feel are so special.
- 3. Georgia: I think we all agree the Bulldogs should have been in the playoffs.
- 4. Texas (12-2): I’m pretty sure the best is yet to come from the Longhorns as they head toward their new home in the SEC.
- 5. Alabama (12-2): The awkward way the Tide lost against Michigan, coupled with all of those players opting out for the NFL Draft and/or the transfer portal makes me think next fall’s Alabama team will not be what we’ve come to expect over the past decade or more. Is the sun beginning to set on the Nick Saban Era?
- 6. Missouri (11-2): The sleeper title threat for 2024?
- 7. Ohio State (11-2): The heat is really on Ryan Day in Columbus.
- 8. Oregon (12-2): It’s still hard to grasp the concept of the Ducks in the Big Ten.
- 9. Florida State (13-1): I thought long and hard about booting the Seminoles clear out of the top 10 after that debacle against Georgia.
- 10. Ole Miss (11-2): Raise your hand if you’re a Lane Kiffin fan … oh come on, the guy is always entertaining.
Monday night’s championship pick: Michigan 42, Washington 24.
Steve Thought O’ The Day – On this day in 1975, “Wheel of Fortune” premiered on U.S. television. I’m pretty sure I was watching.
Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. That B1G Kool-Aid must be some good stuff.
