DAILY DIRT: Want to know who will the big games? You’ve come to the right place
Daily Dirt for Saturday Jan. 18, 2025
Sit back, strap in and enjoy the next three days … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,177 of The Daily Dirt.
1. Is this the best overall weekend of the season for a football fan?
We have both the AFC and NFC semifinals in the NFL on Saturday and Sunday, capped by the College Football Playoff national championship game on Monday night. (Yes, Monday is part of a football fan’s extended weekend.)
Here are my picks for the outcomes:
Saturday
Chiefs 31, Texans 17: Home-field advantage will be a huge in this one. Kansas City is might tough to upend at Arrowhead.
Lions 41, Commanders 31: Look for a lot of points since this will be indoors at Detroit. Yes, the Lions have been decimated by injuries, but have yet to miss a beat.
Sunday
Eagles 21, Rams 10: Once again, home field will be important, and the last time I checked the Rams did not have a reputation as a cold-weather team. Go with the Eagles in Philly.
Bills 30, Ravens 17: Is Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen helps dispose of the Ravens, maybe he actually should be the NFL most valuable player. Cold weather should not be a factor for either of these clubs.
Monday
Ohio State 35, Notre Dame 17: I love the main storyline here, pitting the “World Famous” Ohio State Buckeyes (as Fox play-by-play man Gus Johnson calls them) against Notre Dame and Marcus Freeman, a former Buckeyes player and assistant coach. And throw in the Aneyas Williams of Hannibal, Mo., factor, and you have must-see TV. On the field, I’ll be legitimately shocked if Notre Dame can stay with the World Famous Buckeyes.
2. Did you know that (Part 250)
- That Tommy Brown, the last-living member of the landmark 1947 Dodgers team that included rookie Jackie Robinson, died late this week at age 97. Brown is the youngest MLB player to hit a home run when he was 17 years, 257 days old when homering off Preacher Roe in August 1945.
- That according to the medical journal “The Lancet,” the largest documented meal consumed by one person was in April 1985 and weighed 19 pounds: one pound of liver, two pounds of kidneys, half-pound of steak, two eggs, one pound of cheese, two large slices of bread, one pound of mushrooms, two pounds of carrots, one cauliflower, 10 peaches, four pears, two apples, four bananas, two pounds of plums, two pounds of grapes and two glasses of milk. The person who at the meal was described as a 23-year-old female.
- That there is no roman numeral for zero.
- That animals that lay eggs do not have bellybuttons.
- That a hippo’s jaw can open wide enough to fit a sports car inside.
3. Here’s our weekly tip ‘o the hat to celebrities who are a year older:
- Actor Kevin Costner is 70 today. He should have never left “Yellowstone”.
- Singer Dolly Parton turns 79 on Sunday. And she’s still workin’ 9 to 5.
- Golfer Jack Nicklaus will be 85 on Tuesday. Sorry, Tiger Woods fans. The Golden Bear will always be No. 1.
- Singer Billy Ocean turns 75, also on Tuesday. His best song? “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car” in 1988.
- Basketball player Caitlin Clark will be 23 on Wednesday. Hopefully, those WNBA players who are jealous of her while playing the video for the Billy Ocean song mentioned above, I was reminded how great of an era it was when we had MTV and VH1.ill someday thank her for those larger paychecks they will be receiving in the years to come.
Steve Thought O’ The Day – While playing the video for the Billy Ocean song mentioned above, I was reminded how great of an era it was when we had MTV and VH1.
Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. Did Costner quit “Yellowstone” or did Taylor Sheridan take him to the train station?
