Daily Dirt for Saturday, March 30, 2024

If so, get ready to dig deep … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 906 of The Daily Dirt.

1. Where do lovebirds like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce enjoy their getaways?

America’s favorite couple recently spent some time in a place called Harbour Island in The Bahamas. In case you’re reading this and might be considering a vacation there, too, there’s probably a few items you may want to consider.

This particular oceanside retreat, which is favored by a number of celebrities, will cost you $15,000 — per night.

As you might guess, Harbour Island does boast a few amenities. For that price tag, guests will have a beachfront villa that includes six bedrooms that can accommodate up to 12 guests, a pool, “sprawling” terrace (is there any other kind?) and a fully equipped gym.

Cars are prohibited and privacy is “unparalleled”.

Ahh … but we’re not done.

The real luxury might be in the service, which includes a personal chef and sous chef, a house manager, three butlers, three housekeepers, three gardeners/beach maintenance workers and an evening security guard.

For those wondering, a “sous” chef plays an important role in the formal hierarchy of a kitchen team, acting as the executive chef’s second-in-command. Apparently, he also supervises a lot of stuff.

All reports indicate Taylor and Travis had a grand time. I’m guessing that sous chef made the difference.

2. This week’s celebrity birthdays that we are accenting include:

  • Famed guitarist Eric Clapton is 79 today. He’s also a very underrated vocalist. “Wonderful Tonight” will always be amazing.
  • Another musician, trumpeter Herb Alpert, turns 89 on Sunday. Alpert was also a decent singer in his prime.
  • Actress Ali MacGraw will be 85 on Monday. “Love Story” will always be one of my favorite films.
  • Comedian Eddie Murphy will be 63 on Wednesday. The last time Murphy was actually funny was in the … ummm … 1980s?
  • Actor Craig T. Nelson turns 78 on Thursday. Bring back “Coach”.

3. For those who were alive in 1963, they might remember the introduction of the Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) codes in an effort to streamline the U.S. mail.

Well, 61 years later I finally realize how that ZIP code concept actually aids mail delivery. I know, I know — better late than never, right?

 Here’s the scoop:

  • The first digit represents a broad geographical area, from 0 in the Northeast to 9 in the West.– The following two digits designate the code of a central post office facility in that region.
  • And the last two digits represent small post offices or postal zones.
  • In 1983, the ZIP+4 code was introduced to further increase the precision of mail sorting by adding a hyphen and four more numbers to the five-digit ZIP code. These additional numbers serve to identify specific delivery routes that can represent houses on one side of a street or even a particular building that receives a lot of mail.

Steve Thought O’ The Day – Craig T. Nelson has also been solid in his supporting role on “Young Sheldon”.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. Do you think Taylor and Travis flew Southwest?
