DAILY DIRT: We learned quite a bit during the first full week of the season

Daily Dirt for Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024

Rest easy, JRG. Mizzou is No. 10. … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,048 of The Daily Dirt

1. We’re one full week into the college football season, and what have we learned?

  • First and foremost, Florida State, now 0-2, was a complete fraud.
  • And is Oregon next on that list? Granted, one game does not a season make, but the allegedly mighty Ducks were mighty lucky to have beaten Idaho. Any team with legitimate title hopes cannot look like Oregon did against Spud Tech.
  • Clemson? See ya. Dabo may finally have to start figuring out how to use the portal. The old days are in the rear-view mirror. It’s a brand new world out there.
  • Finally, Penn State’s offense may have finally joined modern-day college football. That was a very nice win over West Virginia.

With that in mind, here’s our first Daily Dirt Top 10 of the season:

  • 1. Georgia (1-0): Do you realize the Bulldogs have won 46 consecutive games against teams not coached by Nick Saban?
  • 2. Ohio State (1-0): There’s nothing to worry about in Columbus until Oct. 12 when the Buckeyes venture west to play Oregon. I assume Oregon will have things figured out by then.
  • 3. Texas (1-0): I’ll be shocked if the Longhorns do not hang 40 on Michigan Saturday.
  • 4. Ole Miss (1-0): Maybe, just maybe Lane Kiffin can truly begin to get the credit he deserves as a head coach. Folks, we’re talking Ole Miss among the nation’s elite.
  • 5. Alabama (1-0): Kaleb DeBoer, take a deep breath, sir. Things look just fine in Tuscaloosa.
  • 6. Notre Dame (1-0): Irish have a legit chance for a 12-0 regular season after that win at Texas A&M.
  • 7. Miami (1-0): This is the team that could run the ACC, not Clemson. Also, so glad to see the Hurricanes have gone back to their traditional uniform look of years past. (For the record, seven of the other nine teams in this week’s top 10 all wear traditional looks year in, year out.)
  • 8. USC (1-0): That was an impressive victory over LSU. By the way, I’m pretty sure the countdown to when Brian Kelly loses his job at LSU has officially started.
  • 9. Penn State (1-0): The Nittany Lions travel to USC on Oct. 12. That could be must-see TV.
  • 10. Missouri (1-0): All of a sudden, that Sept. 14 game vs. Boston College looks quite interesting.

2. Did you know (Part 111)

  • That there are 59 days until Halloween, 87 days until Thanksgiving and 114 days until Christmas.
  • That Robert Redford, Ryan O’Neal, Burt Reynolds, Nick Nolte and James Caan were considered for the role of Rocky Balboa in the initial “Rocky” film — ahead of Sylvester Stallone.
  • That it would take the average person 17 months to walk the Great Wall of China.
  • That Chris Farley was the original choice to star in “Elf,” not Will Ferrell.
  • That Meat Loaf was runner-up to John Belushi to play John “Bluto” Blutarski in “Animal House”.

3. Want to see some rather starling figures?

Check out how the average admission prices have advanced upward over the years at Disneyland’s Magic Kingdom in Florida:

  • 1975: $6
  • 1979: $7
  • 1982: $15

  • 1987: $28
  • 1989: $29
  • 1990: $31
  • 1993: $35
  • 1995: $37
  • 1997: $39.75
  • 2000: $46
  • 2002: $50
  • 2005: $59.75
  • 2007: $71
  • 2009: $79
  • 2010: $82
  • 2011: $85
  • 2013: $95
  • 2014: $99
  • 2015: $105
  • 2016: $110
  • 2017: $115
  • 2018: $122
  • 2019: $125
  • 2022: $109 (Mounting customer dissatisfaction spurred the discount in 2022, according to media reports.)
  • 2024: $124 (Prices can be much higher, depending on age and particular type of ticket. The highest rate, which deals with overall park access, is $259 for those 10 and over.)

Steve Thought O’ The Day — We’re just under three weeks from the official first day of autumn, but once the calendar reaches September it is fall. Case closed.
