DAILY DIRT: Well, maybe the dingo did eat her baby

I once said, “Yada, yada, yada” to my wife. For the record, it wasn’t a pleasant experience … Welcome to today’s three thoughts that make up Vol. 1,020 of The Daily Dirt.

1. We can continue our tribute to the four principal characters of the classic TV sitcom, “Seinfeld.”

Today’s spotlight shines on Elaine, the lone female of the quartet that also included Jerry, Kramer and yesterday’s subject, George. Once Jerry’s love interest and later his best friend, Elaine’s assertiveness, intelligence and sense of humor was based on some of Seinfeld’s actual old girlfriends.

The following are three of Elaine’s funniest responses on the show:

Gold medal: “Maybe the dingo ate your baby!” (Elaine spouted this famous line at a dinner party with Jerry. The random comment was meant to mock an otherwise anonymous woman whose conversation was annoying Elaine.)

Silver medal: “I just couldn’t decide if he was really sponge-worthy.” (Elaine’s way of ranking her boyfriends.)

Bronze medal: “Yada yada yada.” (The 153rd episode of the show gave us this classic — April 24, 1997 to be exact. Years later, “Yada yada yada” was named the No. 1 funniest phrase in TV history by The Pailey Center for Media.)

2. Did you know (Part 81)

  • That the naming of tropical storms and hurricanes began in 1953.
  • That nomophobia is the fear of being away from your cell phone.
  • That in North Korean basketball slam dunks are worth three points, successful field goals in the final three minutes are worth eight points and “perfect” three-pointers (a swish) are worth four points. Oh, and a point is deducted for missing a free throw.
  • That 50 percent of apartments in Los Angeles do not come with a fridge.
  • That “clinomania” is the desire to remain in bed all day.

3. Songs turning 47 years old in 2024 include:

  • “Brick House” by the Commodores.
  • “We Will Rock You” by Queen.
  • “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffet.
  • “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees.
  • “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac.

Feel a little bit older?

Steve Thought O’ The Day — For all his positive NBA numbers, LeBron James is the owner of another rather dubious mark. James has committed a record 5,199 career turnovers — more than 600 more than runner-up Russell Westbrook’s 4,586.

Steve Eighinger writes daily for Muddy River News. “Nice game, pretty boy” should have made the cut.
