Daily Dirt for Aug. 23, 2021

Vol. 45 of the Daily Dirt goes where no other edition has gone — keys to a successful marriage. Hey, we’re here to help. Hopefully, these thoughts will do just that:

1. Kathy and I have been married close to 23 years. It was the second go-round for both us, so neither one of us are any Johnny-com-lately to the wedding vow thing. Part of any successful marriage is being able to accept the good, bad and ugly when it comes to your partner, and from Kathy’s standpoint she’s had more than her fair share of “B” and “C.” Having experienced many years of wedded bliss, I feel qualified to offer a few pieces of advice to anyone reading this who may be considering marriage or still in the newlywed stage. These thoughts say a lot about what makes a marriage work:

A. “Marriage lets you annoy one person for the rest of your life,” — Unknown. (And I must admit, I feel have this down to a fine art.)

B. “A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.” — Mignon McLaughlin. (I have no real idea who Mignon is, but she nailed it.)

C. “Never marry the one you can live with, marry the one you cannot live without.” — Unknown. (This “Unknown” person should seriously be some sort of therapist.)

D. “A perfect marriage is just two imperfect people who refuse to give up on each other.” — Unknown. (I’m telling ya, this Unknown character has a future.)

E. “A happy marriage is a long conversation which always seems too short.” — Andre Maurois. (This might be my favorite piece of advice of all these. I love just sitting and talking with Kathy … and she eventually loves telling me to please shut up.)

2. High school football opens this weekend. A year ago at this time it didn’t appear we would have a season at all. Remember those days? So be grateful — and thankful — when Friday night rolls around and you’re able to enjoy watching your favorite prep team in action.

3. Fifty years ago this month I was preparing to enter my senior year in high school. Other things going on in the world at that time included:

Paul McCartney announced the formation of Wings.

Legendary pitcher Satchel Paige was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Harmon Killebrew became the 10th player in MLB history to reach 500 career home runs.

Construction began on the Superdome in New Orleans.

The Cardinals’ Bob Gibson, at age 35, threw an 11-0 hitter against the Pirates.

Steve Eighinger writes for Muddy River News. He received this in his Sunday night fortune cookie.
