Heading into general election, Troup hopes to become 12th consecutive mayor since 1933 to win re-election after first term

QUINCY — Mike Troup’s victory over Dan Brink on Tuesday in the Republican mayoral primary keeps alive the chance of him becoming the 12th consecutive mayor in Quincy since 1933 to win re-election after his first term in office.
Troup is campaigning for his second term in office and will run against independent Linda Moore in the general election on April 1. Troup defeated Democrat Nora Baldner to earn his first term in office in 2021.
Republican Emmett Wilson, who won the 1931 campaign over incumbent Democrat Frank Jasper, was upset by 3rd Ward Democratic alderman Leo Lenane in the 1933 mayoral race. Every mayor since Lenane — 11 of them — has served two terms in office. (Lenane did it twice, winning election in 1933 and 1937, then again in 1953 and 1957.)
Democrat George Meyer Jr., a former Adams County sheriff, was elected in a special mayoral race on Oct. 15, 1946, defeating Republican Sam Schneidman by a vote of 8,515 to 6,569. The race was necessary after Schneidman’s brother, Edward, died in a fire that swept Chicago’s LaSalle Hotel on June 5, 1946. Edward Schneidman, a Republican, was first elected as mayor in 1941 and re-elected in 1945, defeating Lenane each time.
After Meyer served the remainder of Edward Schneidman’s term, he then won re-election in 1949.
