Governor J.B. Pritzker has tapped former State Senator Andy Manar as his new deputy governor for budget and economy.

The Bunker Hill Democrat stepped down from the Senate in January to take a role as a senior advisor in the Pritzker administration. In the Senate, Manar chaired the Appropriations Committee and pushed through a massive school reform law in 2017.

Manar was elected Mayor of Bunker Hill in 2001 and chaired the Macoupin County Board until his election to the Illinois Senate in 2012.

“Over the last 2 and a half years I’ve been so lucky to serve with so many smart and amazing people who are deeply committed to working families,” Pritzker said during the announcement. “Andy follows in that proud tradition. He comes with a deep well of respect all across the state, and he will provide immeasurably important perspective in this new role.”

Manar takes over for Dan Hynes, the former state comptroller, who has been running point for the governor on the budget since Pritzker took office in 2019.
