Quincy Mayor Mike Troup made it through his swearing in as the city’s next mayor pretty easily.

But as he made his opening remarks to the packed house in the Quincy City Council Chambers, the emotions seemed to get to him a bit, especially when discussing his family.

“The challenge for our city for the next few years…is putting the pieces together and making the plan work,” Troup said. “It’s up to us to make the most of it.”

A native of Quincy and son of immigrants, Troup has put in his time of civic duty serving on various boards and committees leading up to Quincy’s top job. His first meeting was under 20 minutes, but he’ll be putting in many more hours away from the cameras and lights over the next four years as he deals with a full plate of issues that come with a city of nearly 40,000.

First time Aldermen Greg Fletcher (R-1) and Parker Freiburg (R-3) were sworn in as were six other incumbents who won re-election last month: Dave Bauer (D-2), Tony Sassen (R-4), Mike Rein (R-5), John Mast (R-5), Richie Reis (D-6) and Jack Holtschlag (D-7).

Alderman Katie Awerkamp (D-6) was absent.

City Clerk Laura Oakman swears in Mike Troup as Quincy’s next mayor.

Also sworn in were City Clerk Laura Oakman and City Treasurer Linda Moore. Deputy City Clerk Amanda Keck was also recognized, taking Oakman’s place as she moved up.

Three resolutions were passed, including a 13-0 approval of a nearly $1.9 million bid from Rees Construction for sidewalks along North 12th between Seminary Road and Koch’s Lane, construction of storm sewers and the resurfacing of Koch’s Lane from U.S. 24 to North 12th, including some portions of North 12th.
