Gems open Prospect League season with road victory

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Jake Stipp allowed one run over 4 2/3 innings of relief, and Jason Jennerjohn got the Quincy Gems out of a jam in the eighth inning in a 3-2 victory over the Springfield Sliders on Thursday night as the Prospect League kicked off its season.

Bailey Wendell started on the mound for the Gems and allowed one hit and three walks in three shutout innings. Stipp took over and struck out six. He allowed an RBI triple in the eighth and left with runners on first and third and two outs. Jennerjohn struck out the next hitter.

Jennerjohn allowed an RBI single in the ninth, but with the tying run on base, he got the last two outs of the game on fly balls to earn the save.

The Gems needed only seven pitches to score their first run. After Ryan Hutchinson walked, Alec Patino tripled to center field. Andrew Fay then drive in Patino with a sacrifice fly. Quincy’s only other run scored in the sixth when Alec Wattermann doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Carter Bither.
