QU baseball players showcasing talent for scouts in summer leagues

Two weeks ago, left-handed pitcher Riley Martin became the fourth Quincy University baseball player to be selected in the MLB amateur draft in the past six years.  

Lance Logsdon, the junior designated hitter/first baseman, might be the next. You can read the story of his summer spent in the MLB Draft League here.

Who else might be in the mix? Here is a look at the QU baseball players participating in wood-bat leagues this summer and how they have fared:

Dayson Croes, Green Bay Booyah, Northwoods League

Croes has played in 38 games and is hitting .280 with three doubles, one triple, one home run and 17 RBIs. The All-American third baseman has 11 multi-hit games, and he has just four errors defensively while playing shortstop a majority of the time.

Brett Taucher, Rockford Rivets, Northwoods League

The big senior right-hander joined the Rivets midseason and has made four appearances out of the bullpen with a 3.60 ERA. He has struck out four and allowed two runs in five innings. Opponents are hitting .167 against him.

Gino D’Alessio, Quincy Gems, Prospect League

Currently on the shelf nursing an injury, D’Alessio hit .404 in 29 games with the Quincy Gems in the Prospect League with five doubles, one triple, five home runs and 30 RBIs. The sophomore shortstop was one of only two players in the league hitting .400 or better. 

Tyler Carpenter, Quincy Gems, Prospect League

A dual threat who will be a senior at QU, Carpenter is hitting .276 in 18 games with three home runs and eight RBIs. Also a left-handed reliever, Carpenter has made nine appearances out of the bullpen. He has tossed 15 innings with 20 strikeouts, seven walks and a 3.00 ERA.

Brock Boynton, Quincy Gems, Prospect League

A late-season addition as the Gems make a playoff push, Boynton has two hits and two RBIs in three games. The starting center fielder as a freshman for the Hawks, Boynton has played center field and right field for the Gems.

Austin Simpson, Burlington Bees, Prospect League

A transfer from Southeastern Community College, Simpson is enjoying a productive summer. He is hitting .312 in 42 games with six doubles, four home runs and 23 RBIs. The sophomore first baseman also has been hit by a pitch a team-leading seven times.

Brett Panick, Normal CornBelters, Prospect League

Finding the strike zone has been a struggle for the freshman left-handed reliever. He’s walked 33 batters in 14 appearances spanning 12 innings. He has 15 strikeouts with 16 hits and 29 earned runs allowed.

Nolan Wosman, Williamsport Crosscutters, MLB Draft League

The Palmyra, Mo., product and junior second baseman played six games with the Crosscutters, hitting .130 with one double, one home run and four RBIs in 23 at-bats. 

Luke Napleton, Northwest Indiana Oilmen, Midwest Collegiate League

A late-season addition, Napleton has played in six games and is hitting .263 with a double and two RBIs in 27 plate appearances. The sophomore catcher also has thrown out five would-be base stealers in 43 innings for the league’s first-place team.

Tom Conzemius, Northwest Indiana Oilmen, Midwest Collegiate League

In seven appearances out of the bullpen, Conzemius has an 0-1 record with a 4.91 ERA. The sophomore left-handed pitcher has struck out 12 and walked 13 batters.

Brennan Fisher, Joliet Generals, Midwest Collegiate League

Named to the league’s all-star team, Fisher has been a consistent force in the Generals’ lineup, hitting .343 with one double, two triples, one home run and 14 RBIs. The freshman outfielder has scored 21 runs with a .446 on-base percentage.

Logan Voth, KC Knights, Ban Johnson League

The freshman shortstop, who was injured during the spring, has enjoyed a productive summer in Kansas City. The Mendon Unity product is hitting better than .275 with a fielding percentage better than .985.

Tim Reinholz, Shredded Cheese, CarShield Collegiate League

The freshman left-handed pitcher has made a team-leading five starts and six appearances overall, fashioning a 2-1 record and 2.73 ERA. He has struck out 34 and walked 14 in 25.2 innings with opponents hitting .271 against him.

Andrew Buescher, Adidas A’s, CarShield Collegiate League

The freshman infielder is hitting .250 in 18 games for the league-leading team. He has one double, one home run and six RBIs with a .375 on-base percentage.
