QUINCY — A gas leak at a downtown Quincy restaurant forced the evacuation of a quarter of a city block.

Quincy Fire Department received the call after 1:40 p.m. Friday. All businesses and residences in the buildings that line the northwest side of Sixth Street were evacuated.

The QFD incident commander said Ameren was on the scene to contain the leak, which emanated from the Mariscos El Charro, 534 Hampshire.

One group of residents decided to enjoy the nice weather and sit outside a block away at the Taproom and Cafe, 601 Maine, saying they were concerned. However, one young lady said she had renter’s insurance.

Firefighters were on the scene for about one hour.
