Investigation reveals student brought handgun to Quincy Notre Dame earlier this month

QUINCY — A student at Quincy Notre Dame has been suspended after allegedly bringing a handgun to the school earlier this month.

A news release sent Friday, March 28, noted that members of the school administration were informed on Thursday, March 27, that a handgun was allegedly brought to school on Monday, March 10. School administrators, with the help of a Quincy Police Department school liaison officer, immediately began an investigation into what had allegedly occurred.

“Based on the facts gathered, we have confirmed that a handgun was brought into school on Monday, March 10,” the statement read. 

Adam Yates, chief of the Quincy Police Department, said in a statement issued late Friday afternoon that members of his department were recently called to QND in regard to a report of the weapon.

“Quincy Police have recovered a handgun from a residence in Adams County,” Yates said. “The investigation is ongoing.  The Quincy Police Department will continue to work closely with QND administrators as this matter proceeds as well as assist with any requests for enhanced security.”

The family of the student, a juvenile, is cooperating with law enforcement, the statement said.

“Quincy Notre Dame’s Board of Directors, in combination with the school’s administration, understands the seriousness of this situation,” the statement read. “Necessary and proper steps are being taken to review our safety protocols in response to what has transpired.”
