ISP investigation into Thursday shooting underway; subject’s name confirmed

QUINCY — The Illinois State Police’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has begun its investigation into Thursday evening’s fatal shooting involving deputies with the Adams County Sheriff’s office.

Preliminary information indicates at approximately 3:50 p.m., Adams County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area of 5th Street and West Radio Road south of Quincy on a report of a man with a handgun.  As officers approached, the man reportedly pointed the handgun at officers.  Officers discharged their firearms, striking the subject.  Officers rendered medical aid to the subject who died from his injuries at the scene.

The deceased is Bradley S. Havermale, 29, of Quincy.

Adams County Sheriff Tony Grootens said the three ASCO officers involved were Sgt. Sam Smith, Investigator John Schone and Deputy Logan Peter. All three were taken to Blessing Hospital for evaluation and none were injured.

Chief Deputies Blue Richards and Patrick Frazier, Sgt. Randy Huseman, Deputy Phil Zimmerman and Grootens were also on the scene.

The investigation is active and ongoing and once it is completed, ISP will submit the case to the Adams County State’s Attorney.

State’s Attorney Gary Farha said he was waiting on the autopsy and the completion of the investigation before determining how to proceed.
