National Popcorn Day is this weekend, so here’s what flavors are Popp’n on Maine
QUINCY — The only popcorn shop within an 80-mile radius will be closed for National Popcorn Day on Sunday, but a lot is still popping between now and then.
Upon stepping into Popp’n on Maine, 917 Maine, guests are transported back in time to every movie theater and state fair they’ve ever been to — the sweet and salty smell of nostalgia.
After sampling enough flavors to satisfy any sense of curiosity, the next step is to choose a size. Five sizes are offered:
- Mini, starting at $4.50;
- Small, starting at $6.50;
- Medium, starting at $9.50;
- Large, starting at $11.50;
- and 5-gallon, starting at $85.00.
Then comes the most difficult part: choosing a flavor. The current lineup consists of more than a dozen flavors — some are salty, some are sweet, some are sour and some are a combination. No matter the taste preference, there’s something for everyone.
WARNING: Those who buy any of the mixes below may be at risk of eating the entire bag in one sitting.
For people with a sweet tooth
TUXEDO: A classic pick for chocolate lovers, with ribbons of white and milk chocolate drizzled over caramel corn.
MOOSECRUNCH: Pretzels and M&Ms mixed with milk chocolate drizzled caramel corn. No further explanation needed.
BIRTHDAY CAKE: This mix has all the familiar rainbow-colored sprinkles and sugary-sweet taste of vanilla frosting. It’s somebody’s birthday somewhere.
For people unafraid to try something new
Don’t knock ’em ’til ya try ’em!
SOUR CHERRY The words “sour” and “cherry,” and especially the two words together, have rarely been associated with popcorn, but those willing to take the chance won’t be disappointed with this mix’s sour-sweet, crunchy-crackly, cherry-flavored outer coating.
CHEESY PIZZA: Don’t get it twisted. Cheesy pizza popcorn is not the same as cheddar popcorn. This mix is cheesier, has a slight marinara-esque pizza flavoring and is sure to bring back memories of Chuck E. Cheese and Bonkers pizzas overflowing with cheesy, gooey goodness.
RED HOT: Stay toasty with this mix’s warm, cinnamon spice — temperatures are forecasted to dip to 6 degrees on Sunday.
For people still sad Christmas is over
One word: Ditto.
PEPPERMINT SWIRL If it’s still snowing, it’s still peppermint season. This mix has a vanilla popcorn base with crushed peppermints and a white chocolate drizzle.
PRANCER POP: Few things in life are finer than having caramel corn, milk chocolate and peanut butter all in one bag.
SANTA MIX: Cookies may fuel Santa in December, but by January, it’s this mix of vanilla, caramel and toffee popcorn with milk chocolate and crushed peanuts that keeps him going.
JINGLE BELL MIX: A vanilla popcorn base combined with the Red Hot mix and green apple, this mix is a favorite among Popp’n employees.
For those who prefer the classics
An old saying goes something like, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” These flavors have stood the test of time — and for good reason.
CHEDDAR No need for a cheesy profile — this mix speaks for itself.
KETTLE A classic dating back to 18th century Europe, kettle corn is known for its impressive shelf life — up to two months, if stored properly.
MAINE MIX: This go-to combination of cheddar and caramel corn was first popularized in Chicago in the late 70s and is now Popp’n on Maine’s best-selling mix.
MOVIE: This is as classic as it gets, folks: a masterful approach to plain popcorn with butter. Pairs well with cozy nights and Christopher Nolan movies.
Regardless of flavor choice, make sure to snag a bag quick. The shop is closed Sunday, but guests who pop in Saturday will receive a special National Popcorn Day surprise with their purchase.
Popp’n on Maine is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information or to place an online order, head to their website at quincypopcorn.com.
