HANNIBAL, Mo. — One person died Monday in a house fire in Hannibal.
The Hannibal Fire Department reported in a press release that at 2:20 p.m. Monday, April 15, crews responded to a report of a house fire at 2530 Lakenan Road. Firefighters said smoke and flames were coming from the back of the house when they arrived.
HFD reported two residents made it out of the structure, but one person was still in the house. One of the residents who made it out was transported to Hannibal Regional Hospital by Marion County Ambulance District for treatment.
Upon gaining control of the fire, firefighters entered the residence and found the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Hannibal Fire Department reported an offensive attack was made through the front door of the structure, but they encountered heavy fire conditions and were forced to back out of the structure. They switched to a defensive attack until the fire could be contained to re-enter the residence.
The stations responded with eight duty crew members and four administrative staff. Ten off-duty firefighters were called in to respond to the scene.
The Hannibal Police Department, Hannibal Board of Public Works, Hannibal Building Inspector, Marion County Coroner, and the Marion County Ambulance District assisted with the scene.
The incident is under investigation. The Hannibal Fire Department will release more details as they become available.
