Quincy City Council, Plan Commission to review new Broadway location for coffee bar

The Quincy City Council referred a special use permit to the Quincy Plan Commission for review that will consider a second location for Carter’s Coffee Bar.

The owner, Ciara Weese, has contracted the property at 641/645 Broadway for its new location. The Plan Commission will review and send back to the City Council for final approval.

Alderman Mike Rein (R-5) wanted to make sure that the new location would be able to adequately handle the flow of traffic. The coffee bar’s 3815 Maine shop has generated a strong following and that has caused a bit of a traffic crunch at times. The City wants traffic to enter Carter’s drive-through from the east as coming in from the west has caused the traffic snarls.

“I don’t want the same problem on Broadway,” Rein said.

Mayor Mike Troup made appointments to the Bet on Q Grant Review Committee, which will oversee the program to provide financial support for local entertainment events. The revenue is coming from the 1 percent food and beverage tax and will provide grants ranging from $1,000 to $25,000, although the program’s guidelines say requests in excess of $25,000 “will be considered based on the draw/impact of the event”.

The grants can be used to bring existing regional/national performers or events to Quincy (such as a one-day concert or a week-long festival), to help promoters expand existing entertainment events in Quincy or to help a new entertainment event off the ground.

Committee members are Trevor Beck, Rod McClean, Ray Wilson, Jim Rinella, Holly Cain, Pattie Paxton, Parker Freiburg, Lora Marcolla and Mayor Troup.

Quincy Police Chief Rob Copley discussed the ceremony to honor fallen officers, which will be held Friday at 8:45 a.m. at the Quincy Police Department, 530 Broadway.
