Sheriff’s deputy shoots man with knife during Saturday morning altercation on Melview Road

QUINCY — A man was hospitalized Saturday morning after he was shot by an Adams County Sheriff’s Department deputy during an altercation on the city’s south side.

Chief Deputy Pat Frazier said a 911 call was made at approximately 6:59 a.m. Saturday. Deputies arrived at a home in the 2300 block of Melview Road at approximately 7:12 a.m. and encountered a disturbance, learning that a male had threatened three other subjects in the home with a knife.

The deputies confronted the man upon arrival, and the man also threatened the deputies. The deputies when deployed tasers, but that did not subdue the man, who continued to threaten them with a knife.

One of the deputies then fired one round from his gun and struck the man with the knife. The man eventually was taken to Blessing Hospital for medical treatment. His status was unknown as of noon Saturday.

Because a deputy used a handgun during the altercation, the Illinois State Police is handling the investigation. Neither the name of the deputy nor the name of the man with the knife has been released. Charges are pending.
