QUINCY — KHQA-TV has announced that the newshub which they had been contributing to will now pull a Horace Greeley and “Go West.”

Sinclair Broadcast Group announced last week that Beginning Dec. 9, KTVO-TV out of Kirksville, Mo. will produce a daily regional newscast that will air on KHQA’s digital signals, with KHQA personnel contributing content. Sinclair owns both stations.

A post on the station’s Website described the move as “The shifting of resources in the Quincy market will allow both stations to ensure the long-term success and continue to bring the top local, regional, and national news to each market. KHQA website, khqa.com, will remain in place, ensuring easy access to community news.”

KHQA has consistently trailed WGEM-TV in local news viewership for decades, but since the Hannibal/Quincy/Keokuk ABC/CBS market affiliate reduced staff locally and became part of the Champaign/Springfield/Quincy news axis, their news ratings have not improved according to data from the AC Nielsen Corp., the company that measures television viewership.

The Hannibal/Quincy/Keokuk TV market dropped from No. 174 to No. 176 this year in terms of overall households they serve out of 210 TV media markets nationwide. The Kirksville/Ottumwa market is No. 200, but will still be where the news originates because its station has the greater production capacity, according to sources familiar with the technical aspects of the company.

Officials with Sinclair Broadcast Group did not respond to multiple requests for further details.
