Stice family partners with friends to create Down Home Pub & Eatery
QUINCY — When you grow up working in the family restaurant business, it can be very difficult to get that lifestyle out of your veins.
Even at the ripe old age of 70.
“But 70 is young,” Colleen Stice said with a smile.
Stice and her husband, Mike, and friends (and sisters) Stephanie and Tammy Kaufman have combined to open Down Home Pub & Eatery, 509 S. Ninth. The restaurant has been open since Nov. 30.
“I just wanted to do something a little bit different,” Colleen said.
As a young girl, Colleen spent hours working with her mother and grandmother at Grandma’s Kitchen in La Plata, Mo.
Asked how her mother would feel about this adventure, Colleen responded, “I think she would be very proud.”
“Probably. Most likely,” Colleen chuckled.
The Stices also owned and operated Izzy’s Bar and Grill at Fifth and Oak before it closed in late 2015.
Colleen and Stephanie have been waitressing together for around five years and had many discussions about having their own place. Once this location became available, they jumped at the opportunity.
Their goal is to provide a family atmosphere and food that is, well, down home.
“it’s all part of somebody,” Colleen said. “The tenderloins we have are from Izzy’s. The pizzas are my husband’s recipe … all homemade. The specialty sandwiches are Stephanie’s. The Smashburger was our son’s. Everybody had kind of a hand in it.”
A gameplan came together during the hours Colleen and Stephanie spent waitressing together.
“It’s all ideas that you have over the years of working in the business,” Colleen said. “Ideas that you wish someone else had done make sense to you. You try it. Hope it works.”
Some of those ideas are:
- Weekend entertainment including bands and comedians.
- Monday Night Trivia with a pizza buffet.
- Taco Night on Tuesday.
- Famly Night on Wednesday with animated films for the youngsters.
- Breakfast buffets on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Hours of operation for Down Home Pub and Eatery are:
- Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to midnight
- Friday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday
- Saturday 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday
- Sunday 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
