Suspect in Third and Elm shooting dies

QUINCY – The Illinois State Police reports a 49-year-old Baylis man who shot a Quincy Police officer Thursday morning died from return gunfire.

Quincy Police Department officers responded to the 700 block of North Third at 11:51 a.m. During an investigation of a disturbance at a residence, a QPD officer was shot and another QPD officer returned fire.

The officer was taken to Blessing Hospital. His injuries were considered non-life threatening.

The suspect was also struck and transported to Blessing Hospital where he died. 

ISP is handling the investigation in the officer-involved shooting and said no further information is available at this time.

Multiple law enforcement officials from the Illinois State Police, Quincy Police Department and the Adams County Sheriff’s Department were at the scene during the incident.

QPD Chief Adam Yates said he hoped to release more details Friday.
