Things are looking up for Quincy’s hotel scene

QUINCY — It appears the sky could be the limit when it comes to creating more hotel rooms for Quincy.
Just days after the Quincy Plan Commission recommended approval for a special permit for a six-story hotel at the derelict Welcome Inn property at 200 Maine, the developers of a boutique hotel at the old Illinois State Bank building downtown tell Muddy River News that all systems are a go.
The founder and Chief Executive of Tanniger Companies, parent company to the Patio Restaurant & Lounge, indicated that there’s no sense of rivalry between the two projects.
“Tanninger Companies enthusiastically supports the Commission’s decision to advance the proposed six-story boutique hotel and rooftop bar along the mighty Mississippi River,” Ryan Jude Tanner said in a statement to MRN. “This important step brings Quincy closer to transforming an iconic downtown into a vibrant destination for residents and visitors alike. Quincy has a story to tell, and we can all feel it: let the show begin!”
As reported by MRN, the Welcome Inn transformation requires special approval to go above four stories. If approved by the council, the new hotel would stand approximately 20 feet taller than the Microtel Inn & Suites, 200 S. Third Street.
The special request was made by Sam Adler, the managing director for the St. Louis-based real estate development firm New + Found. Adler said it was one of three riverfront properties currently in development under the company.
Like the Tanniger bank project at 531 Hampshire, plans include a rooftop bar.
But indications are that developers feel there’s plenty of room for all of them.
“We believe this project will spark significant economic growth, creating new jobs, attracting tourism, and bringing fresh energy to downtown businesses and cultural venues,” Tanner continued. “We’re excited that this project is moving forward in parallel with our future hotel, still slated for early 2027.”
Tanner estimates construction of the bank building project will take 14 to 16 months. He promised continued updates to the community as they finalize the permitting requirements.

“We commend the Commission for recognizing the power of these investments to help drive downtown revitalization,” Tanner added. “We think we can all agree: Quincy is dope!”
Quincy Convention Bureau Executive Director Holly Cain told MRN that she’s thrilled the “new first impression from the west” will be a new hotel.
“Our recent hotel study shows we could use an 80 to 90 room hotel,” Cain revealed. “The last hotel built was in 2008 with the Microtel. We know that in keeping rates more affordable, due to a limited 805 current rooms, and with it located right downtown in our hospitalityquarter, it couldn’t be better.”
Cain was also pleased to learn from MRN that the Tainnger project is moving forward.
“We could definitely use a boutique hotel to anchor the new (6th Street) promenade,” she said.
