First two episodes of podcast series about Yohn and ‘nightmare no one saw coming’ available on multiple platforms

QUINCY — The first two episodes of a 10-episode podcast detailing the life and death of Tina Lohman Schmitt of Quincy, as well as the trial for Bradley Yohn and crimes that he was convicted of in Adams County, were released this week.
The podcast, titled “This Doesn’t Happen to People Like Me,” is available on Apple Podcasts, Amazon, Spotify, Speaker and at the Sword and Scale website. The first episode is titled, “Nightmare in Quincy,” and the second episode is titled “Nowhere to Run.” The first two episodes are each just shy of 30 minutes long.
Sword and Scale, an internet radio show and website with headquarters in Texas, claims to “cover the dark underworld of crime and the criminal justice system’s response to it” on its webpage. Sword and Scale’s first episode launched Jan. 1, 2014. The site features stories of murder, abduction, rape and other bizarre forms of crime.
A 10-man, two-woman jury determined on July 17, 2023, that Yohn was guilty of the crimes he committed on Nov. 9, 2021, at the Quincy home of Schmitt. She died 33 days after the attack on Dec. 12, 2021.
Circuit Judge Roger Thomson sentenced Yohn to 130 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He gave Yohn 30-year sentences for home invasion, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated vehicular hijacking. He gave Yohn 40 years for aggravated criminal sexual assault with a weapon. Yohn will serve each sentence consecutively. Counts for home invasion and residential burglary were merged into the other counts.
Thomson called Yohn “the most reprehensible person ever before me” during his career in law as he issued his sentence.
Sword and Scale uses raw uncensored audio to tell its stories.
“Everything from 911 calls to court testimony, interviews with victims and sometimes with perpetrators give listeners a 360 degree look at the seedy underbelly of human nature and so-called civilized society,” the website says. “Told from an everyman’s point of view, Sword and Scale goes beyond the news clips and the sensationalist headlines to hold up a mirror to the audience and ask, ‘Is it us versus them? Or are we just like ‘them’ too?’”
Sword and Scale provided the following description of the series:
“On a cold December night in 2021, 77-year-old Tina Lohman was rushed to the hospital, her life slipping away. Her family was devastated — but also suspicious. Tina was strong, healthy, and full of life just days before. What happened? As they gathered by her bedside, a dark truth began to emerge: Tina’s death was no accident. It was the horrifying culmination of an unimaginable crime — one that shattered her family and set them on a relentless quest for justice. This is the story of a small town, a loving grandmother, and a nightmare that no one saw coming.”
A description for the first episode reads, “A kind-hearted grandmother, a quiet town, and a horrifying crime — what happened to Tina Lohman will leave you speechless.”
A description for the second episode reads, “Stranded on the side of the road, 77-year-old Tina Lohman thought she was being helped — but instead, she was abducted. What followed was a night of unimaginable horror. As Tina’s husband arrived home, he found their house ransacked, the door kicked in and his wife on the floor — crying, bleeding and whispering a chilling truth: ‘They raped me.’ In this episode, we uncover the terrifying ordeal Tina endured, the calculated cruelty of her attackers, and her desperate attempt to survive.”
The series is written and produced by Michael Stabile. Mike Boudet is the host. Interviews were conducted with Ilsa Terrell and Heidi Young, Lohman’s daughters; Carley Hiland, Lohman’s granddaughter; Josh Jones, former assistant state’s attorney in Adams County; Laura Keck, assistant state’s attorney in Adams County; and David Adam, editor of Muddy River News. It also has recorded testimony from the trial.
