Dorothy “Jean” Arp, 97, of Quincy, died peacefully January 22, 2025, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

Born August 27, 1927, Jean was a daughter of Matthew J. and Agatha (Kohl) Ehrhart. She married Harry J. Arp June 14, 1947, in St. Francis Catholic Church, in Quincy. He preceded her in death.

Jean was a 1945 graduate of Quincy Notre Dame High School. She worked as a bookkeeper at O’Dells jewelry store in Quincy for several years until she and Harry began their family. Jean then became bookkeeper and “office manager” of Arp Brothers Plastering Co., while raising five daughters. As the girls grew older, Jean spent 18 years in special education transportation with the Quincy Public Schools.

She was the buyer for the Blessing Tea Room and later volunteered in the cardiac care unit, a position she loved. In 1999, Jean was appointed Volunteer Coordinator for Adams County Red Cross, working for executive director Pam Shaffer. In addition to her volunteer work with the Red Cross, she also helped with the Adapted Aquatics Program at the YMCA and was a mentor to children at St. Peter’s School. Jean served on the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) board and was a member of the Blessing Auxiliary.

Jean loved trout fishing at Bennet Springs, an activity she enjoyed with Harry and other family members several times a year for many years. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, sewing for family, friends and neighbors, golfing and especially attending her grandchildren’s sports activities. Her greatest joy in later years was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Gg.”
