QUINCY — Grace and June Hendrian, daughters of Adam and Kellea Hendrian of Quincy, are operating a lemonade stand to benefit The Salvation Army. The sisters are inviting children in the community and surrounding area to join them in helping their neighbors in need by operating a lemonade stand of their own.

“Every year that we’ve had this stand, parents have approached my husband Adam and me and said, ‘How did you teach your daughters these really great selfless and loving skills?’” Kellea said in a press release. “After thinking about that question, we decided to invite the community to join us by hosting other lemonade stands throughout the Salvation Army’s service area so other children can experience what it’s like to give back to those in need.”

This event will be held from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3. While Grace and June’s stand will be at Hardy’s Radiator (on North 12th across from the Illinois Veterans Home entrance), children across The Salvation Army Quincy Area Command’s service area — Adams, Pike, and Brown counties in Illinois and Marion, Ralls, Lewis, Shelby, and Monroe counties in Missouri — are encouraged to host a stand at their homes or local businesses. Each stand can customize what drinks and treats they would like to sell.

Participants must contact Tina Lewis at 217-231-5626 to register their stand by Aug. 19. A kit will be provided to each stand by the Salvation Army that includes an iconic Red Kettle, tablecloth, official Grace and June’s lemonade stand signage and payment information for The Salvation Army. All funds raised during this event will be given directly to The Salvation Army Quincy Area Command Office of Family Services.

Grace asked her mom in 2019 if she could have a lemonade stand with the intent to donate all the proceeds to a local charity. Kellea instructed her to consider what organization for which she’d like to raise money. Intending to raise $100 for the Quincy Salvation Army, Grace (and her parents) embarked on pulling together all of the details of the stand. Grace surpassed her goal by $900.

June joined her sister in 2021. The girls raised $2,320, surpassing their goal of $1,250 or 500 meals for families in need.
