QUINCY — The Class of 2020 graduates of the Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing & Health Sciences Medical Laboratory Technology program delivered a 100 percent first-time pass rate on the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification exam, with an average exam score more than 50 points higher than the national average.

The ASCP Board of Certification certifies individuals who meet academic and clinical prerequisites and achieve designated performance levels on its examinations.

“While national certification is voluntary, and not all employers require medical laboratory technicians be certified, they prefer it,” said Von Lithila, program director, medical laboratory technology, Blessing-Rieman. “Some states require national certification along with their own state certification, and certification is required to perform certain laboratory procedures, especially in laboratories that hold College of American Pathologists certification.

“The dual accomplishment of our recent graduates on the certification exam, both the 100 percent first-time pass rate and achieving an average exam score higher than the national average, is a testament to the quality of medical laboratory technology education available to interested students.”
