Letter to the Editor: A call to action for Miller to oppose continuation of Trump tariff policies

As a constituent of Congresswoman Mary Miller, I urge her to carefully consider the potential ramifications of the tariff policies enacted by the Trump administration and to actively oppose their continuation.
Tariffs, while sometimes presented as a tool to protect domestic industries, often result in unintended consequences that harm American consumers and businesses. These consequences include increased costs for everyday goods, disruptions to supply chains, and retaliatory tariffs from other nations that damage our export markets. Small businesses, in particular, bear a disproportionate burden as they struggle to absorb these increased costs and navigate the complexities of international trade.
The long-term effects of widespread tariffs can include a weakening of our economy, reduced competitiveness for American businesses and strained relationships with our international partners.
Furthermore, the implementation of broad tariffs often sends shockwaves through the stock market, creating volatility and uncertainty that directly impacts the retirement savings of her constituents. Many rely on 401(k)s and other investment accounts, and sudden market fluctuations caused by tariff-related trade disputes can erode hard-earned savings.
This instability not only affects those nearing retirement but also younger workers who are building their financial futures. Protecting the long-term stability of the stock market is crucial for the financial well-being of our community, and opposing disruptive tariff policies is a vital step in safeguarding those investments.
Rather than promoting economic growth, such measures often lead to stagnation and decline.
I believe our congresswoman’s focus should remain on creating a balanced trade policy that supports American workers and businesses without resorting to protectionist measures that ultimately harm our economy. I encourage her to champion policies that foster fair competition, promote innovation and open new markets for American goods and services.
I respectfully ask that Congresswoman Miller represent the interests of her constituents by thoroughly evaluating the drawbacks associated with tariff policies and taking a strong stance against their continuation.
