Letter to the Editor: Problem of income inequality can’t be laid at feet of capitalism
Brother Joe, what was the mission of Jesus?
I think scripture and tradition would say Jesus came to save sinners of whom I am chief (1 Timothy 1:15-17). Didn’t Father Ronald Knox say Christians aren’t here to make the world a better place but to colonize heaven?
Certainly Christians are to help the poor again — scripture and tradition. But the problem of income inequality can’t be laid at the feet of capitalism.
When asked, “What’s wrong with the world?”, didn’t GK Chesterton say, “I am”? Ayn Rand extolled selfishness, it is true, but she in no way represents what most capitalists think or feel.
Hasn’t Capitalism lifted more people out of poverty than any other system the world has ever known? Yes, we are flawed creatures and there are greedy evil people in capitalism, but still it gives the greatest amount of good for all.
Didn’t Jesus say we will always have the poor with us?
Maybe Brother Joe thinks Cuba and Venezuela are good models.
