Letter to the Editor: Share your Midwest values by volunteering two hours during October

TriStateServiceFoundationWordsCircleWhite

The TriState Service Foundation has declared October the TriState Month of Service.  People, families and organizations are asked to volunteer two hours in October to help a neighbor, a friend or someone who could use an extra hand.

This is a great opportunity to help our communities and do something good.

In Acts 20:35, Jesus tells us, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”  Many of you know the joy you get from volunteerism. We need others to experience this joy, too. No matter your age, no matter your talent, each of us can make a difference in someone else’s life.

Jesus tells his followers in Matthew 20:25-28 that “Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant.”  I am challenging community leaders to pledge two hours of support for the TriState Month of Service. Many volunteer opportunities exist. If you need a project, email info@tristateservicefoundation.org. This volunteer organization will help you find a service opportunity to fit your needs.

As a young Girl Scout, I remember singing, “We are made for service.” The lyrics tell us our purpose — to serve, to care for others, to love others and to live through sorrow and pain. During a time when our nation is so divided, let’s share our Midwest values by volunteering just two hours during October, not for publicity or self-gain but rather to show we care.

Sincerely,

Linda K. Moore
